Publice Notice: Pertaining to Sharks

NOTICE

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on proposed amendments to the regulations listed below.

In accordance with §28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on the proposed amendments will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, October 28, at the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, 4th Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607.  Written comments on the proposals should be mailed to Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, 2600 Washington Avenue, 3rd Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607.  Copies of the proposed amendments may be reviewed at the Commission Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and may be obtained by calling the Commission at (757) 247-2248.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS

The Commission proposes to amend Regulation 4 VAC 20-490-10 et seq., "Pertaining to Sharks" as follows:
1) Establish a 500,000-pound harvest and landings quota for the commercial spiny dogfish fishery.
2) Establish a daily trip limit of 1000 to 5000 pounds of spiny dogfish.
3) Require daily reporting of harvests and landings of spiny dogfish by fishermen and seafood buyers, to prevent any quota overage.

The Commission proposes to amend Regulation 4 VAC 20-260-10 et seq., "Pertaining to the Culling of Oysters" as follows:
Except in areas where oysters are already managed by a 2 1/2-inch minimum cull size, the Commission proposes to modify the minimum cull size from 3 inches to 2 1/2 inches, for oysters taken from clean cull areas or harvested from areas for direct consumption.
