Public Notice: Pertaining to Spanish and King Mackerel

In accordance with Section 28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on the proposed amendments will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, October 24, 2000, at the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia. Written comments on the proposals should be mailed to Jack Travelstead, VMRC, Fisheries Management Division-3rd Floor, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia 23607. Copies of the proposed amendments may be reviewed at the Commission, Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and may be obtained by calling the Commission at (757) 247-2248.

Proposed Amendments to Regulation 4 VAC 20-540-10 et seq., "Pertaining to Spanish and King Mackerel."

1) The Commission proposes to amend the recreational Spanish mackerel possession limit from 10 to 15 fish.

2) The Commission proposes to amend the recreational king mackerel possession limit from 5 to 3 fish.

3) The Commission proposes to amend the commercial and recreational king mackerel minimum size limit from 14 inches (total length) to 27 inches (total length).

4) The effective date of any regulatory changes would be January 1, 2001.

The purpose of the proposed regulatory changes is to provide greater social and economic benefits from the optimal utilization of the resource and to comply with the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for the Atlantic group Spanish and king mackerel.
