TONY WATKINSON

VIRGINIA MARINE RESOURCES COMMISSION


Tony has been with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission since 1984 and has been Habitat Chief since July 2010.

He is responsible for the managing the state's marine conservation programs, state-owned water bottoms, tidal wetlands and coastal primary sand dunes.

His department handles constituent requests to use state-owned water bottoms for piers, docks or marinas, as well as oyster ground leasing, channel dredging, or development of tidal wetlands or coastal primary sand dunes.

He earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology in 1980 from Virginia Tech, where he also completed courses in the Environmental Science and Engineering Department before beginning a career at the Marine Resources Commission.

Tony grew up on the Eastern Shore, working on his grandfather's oyster dredge boat and commercially crabbing.

He is married with two children and lives in Toano.  He is an avid bicyclist and occasionally participates in mountain bike races.
