State Record Spadefish Caught

A 13-pound, 5-ounce spadefish caught on May 29th by Michael K. Hanhart of Huddleston has been certified as the new Virginia state record by the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament.

Hanhart caught his fish while fishing for spadefish at Wolf Trap Light in the Chesapeake Bay. The spadefish, which measured 23.75 inches in length and had a girth of 26.5 inches, was fooled by a piece of clam being fished under a cork float. Hanhart and his fishing partner, Wayne Harvey, were chumming with clam and drifting their baits back to the structure.

The prior state record of 13 pounds was caught at the Cell in the Chesapeake Bay by Otis Tribble of Topping. Tribble caught his fish on September 19, 1988.
